Smart Power GmbH & Co. KG commissions first large scale battery storage for primary reserve in Bavaria

In Garching near Munich Bavarias first large scale battery has been commissioned. With its capacity of 1.2 megawatthours the battery operates in the primary control reserve market as part of the Entelios virtual power plant within the European power transmission grid.

The battery operation balances electricity generation and consumption. It delivers power in times of shortage and stores it in times of surplus energy correspondent to the actual grid frequency. Today, conventional power plants deliver primary control with a delay of several seconds, whereas battery storages take as few as milliseconds to follow the grid frequency signals.

The CTO of Smart Power GmbH & Co. KG states: “In comparison to conventional power plants, large scale battery storages are much faster and more effective. This saves the grid cost and time”.

Smart Power GmbH & Co. KG is the initiator of the project and responsible for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning. It covers all phases of the project including the battery operation in the primary control reserve market.

During operation of the battery storage, aging and lifecycle effects will be monitored and evaluated by scientific models and analysis in cooperation with the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

The project has been realized together with Bonfiglioli (provider of converters) and NEC Energy Solution / NEC Deutschland GmbH (provider of battery modules).

During the commercialization of the battery, Smart Power cooperates with Entelios AG, the leading market player in the field of industrial control reserve in Germany.
